Latisse – longer, thicker eyelashes.

USA Today (2/23, Lloyd) reports that “another drug is getting a second life because of desirable side effects.” Lumigan [bimatoprost], “a drug Allergan produced to treat glaucoma,” has the side effect of producing “longer, thicker, and darker eyelashes.” The pharmaceutical company recently “developed a spinoff called Latisse, which the” Food and Drug Administration “approved for eyelash enhancement in December.” Latisse “is applied to the upper eyelid.” Like Lumigan, Latisse’s active ingredient is bimatoprost. Dermatologist Richard Glogau, M.D., “a member of the American Academy of Dermatology who practices in San Francisco, says he got his first shipment of 60 boxes three weeks ago and was sold out within a week. A box is a month’s supply.” Still, glaucoma specialist Andrew Iwach, M.D., “cautions people who have eye inflammation, glaucoma, or macular edema to consult with their eye doctor before using Latisse.” Meanwhile, Allergan CEO David Pyott “expects Latisse to ultimately equal the cosmetic use of Botox [botulinum toxin type A].”
