Eating Berries May Combat Age-Related Cognitive Decline

The UK’s Press Association (8/23) reported, “Eating berries may combat age-related mental decline by ‘cleaning up’ the brain” “Scientists have found the first evidence that polyphenol compounds in the fruits activate the brain’s natural ‘housekeeping’ mechanism.” The polyphenolic compounds found in berries appear to help “special immune system cells in the brain called microglia which engulf, remove and recycle harmful biochemical debris.”

Has you’re child had an eye exam this year?

According to the American Optometric Association, studies indicate that 60 percent of children identified as “problem learners” actually suffer from undetected vision problems, and in some cases have been inaccurately diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Sunglasses not optional !! – UV Rays May Cause Significant Damage To Unprotected Eyes

HealthDay (8/20, Thompson) reported that “ultraviolet, or UV, rays can cause significant damage to unprotected eyes, resulting in a number of illnesses and disorders that can rob people of their sight.” Over the long term, UV exposure can play a role in the development of cataracts, macular degeneration, and even cancerAnd, because the majority of sun exposure happens early in life, parents should make sure their children wear sunglasses, too.

Sunglasses should be worn all year round. Sun rays are at work every day, even on cloudy days.

Look for sunglasses that have quality 100% UV protection that won’t rub off over time as you clean the sunglasses. Sunglasses with anti-reflective treatment helps minimize light rays that come from behind from bouncing off the inside of your glasses back into your eye. Good polarization prevents scattered light and reflections from causing blinding conditions.  And don’t forget to look for sunglasses that have good eyeball and eye socket coverage. And last, but not least, look for a pair of sunglasses that compliment your facial structure, wardrobe and life style!

Mid-Range Vision Poses Problems For Many Computer Users – Computer Glasses can help

Writing in the Wall Street Journal (8/17, D1) “Health Journal” on the front of the Personal Journal section, Melinda Beck points out that many people have difficulty seeing objects in the mid-range of their vision, particularly computer screens.

A high quality progressive lens can sometimes help with this issue, but is very dependent on the patients requirements.  There are always trade-offs that are going to need to be made. If you are spending all day in front of the computer for work, then it can be worth it to get a pair of glasses with lenses that a designed specifically for the patient and computer usage. A high quality computer lens provides maximum “mid distance” coverage.  This results in less strain on the eye and neck.  Having the right tools for the job is always important, and your vision is one of your most important tools!

One In Four US Children May Have Vision Problems That Could Impair Learning, AOA Says

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (7/27, Sultan) reports, “One in four children in the US have undetected vision problems which could impair learning, according to the American Optometric Association.” Because “approximately 80 percent of learning comes through a child’s eye,” some experts believe that sending children “to school without good vision could be setting them up for failure or even cause them to be misdiagnosed with a learning disability.

Children who need eyeglasses or contact lenses should be examined annually as their vision often changes rapidly as they age.

Eye-Related Problems Linked To Diet, Sun, And Smoking

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (7/26, Black) reports “a diet rich in all the things that are known to be good for your health also can protect against vision-stealing cataracts,” according to a study in the Archives of Ophthalmology.

A University of Wisconsin-Madison survey found that “those whose diets were poor in fruits, vegetables and whole grains had a high risk of developing cataracts.”

A preliminary study in the same journal found “a correlation between high levels of sun exposure combined with the taking of certain medicines,” including antibiotics and anti-depressants, “with cataract formation.”

Another study  “shows a link between smoking and the development of one of the leading causes of blindness, age-related macular degeneration.”

Optical Goods Manufacturers Promotes National Anti-Counterfeiting Day

VENICE—The Italian Association of Optical Goods Manufacturers (ANFAO) promoted the first National Anti-Counterfeiting Day on July 7 throughout Italy.

The event’s primary objective of increasing the awareness of both companies and citizens on the phenomenon of counterfeiting.

According to the release, during the first nine months of last year alone, the Guardia di Finanza (the Italian Tax Police) confiscated more than 112 million fake products in Italy.

Counterfeit sunglasses[and prescription glasses] expose eyes and vision to risks due to non-compliant lenses, and they can also bring on devastating allergic reactions to the skin caused by the materials used to make the frames,” Tabacchi explained.
