Dermatologist Recommends Sun Protection For All

In “Medicine Matters,” Medscape (7/21, Fryhofer) Dr. Sandra Fryhofer discusses “six tanning and sunscreen myths.” Fryhofer recommends everyone wear sunscreen as much as possible, along with UV-protective sunglasses and a hat.  Even inside cars, people need to wear sunscreen, since “a study in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology found that people who spend a lot of time in the car are more likely to get skin cancers on the side exposed to sunlight during driving.”

And don’t forget your sunglasses!

Tips On How To Avoid “Recreational Water Illness.”

The New York Times (7/12, D7, Brody) reports that people swimming in pools, lakes, or rivers need to be mindful of “what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calls a ‘recreational water illness,’ an infection or irritation caused by germs or chemicals contaminating the water” that may “cause ailments of the ears, eyes, skin, nervous system, gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts, and” infect any cuts or scratches.

Buyer Beware – Seizure of 560,000 pairs of unsafe sunglasses

As part of an operation that involved numerous provinces in Italy, the Venice Guardia di Finanza (Italian tax police) seized about 560,000 pairs of sunglasses made in China and valued at 10 million Euro: the lenses were considered to be an extreme health hazard.

The operation was triggered by a display of eyeglasses in a Venice store with price tags that were well below market prices.

Technical analyses of the material demonstrated that in addition to not having UV filters, the lenses also released nickel on contact with perspiration.

These sunglasses and prescription glasses often end up in bargain stores or on the internet at too good to be true prices.  A knowledgeable person can quickly ascertain a fake by the quality of the materials and the lenses.  A true quality pair of sunglasses will have at least a polycarbonate lenses, which won’t be found in these fakes (too expensive) the metal hardware is often flimsy and has no protective coatings.  The plastic from the cheap molds will have rough edges, rather than the smooth hand polished edges from a real pair. All in all, they are cheap, but dangerous toys that will allow more UV exposure to your eyes and damage them over time.  F.E.

One In Three Adults Unaware Of Eye Health Risks Of Too Much Sun Exposure

Wearing a hat and protecting eyes from harmful UV rays is as much a part of sun protection as sunscreen. Excessive UV exposure may result in pterygium, macular degeneration, or cataracts. And, even a few hours of intense, unprotected exposure can have consequences.

Don’t wait until it is too late and never go outside without your sunglasses on, even on a cloudy day. UV rays go right thru clouds like they’re not ever there!  F.E.

OCT May Trump MRI For Measuring MS Effects In Nervous System

MedPage Today Share to FacebookShare to Twitter (6/7, Gever) reported, “A common retinal imaging technology could eventually supplement or even replace MRI for tracking multiple sclerosis (MS) severity and progression.” MedPage Today added, “In analyses presented at the annual meeting of the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers, distinctive changes to the optic nerve were seen in MS patients imaged with optical coherence tomography (OCT) that correlated with MRI-based markers of disease activity.”

This is an example of why a true, comprehensive eye exam is so much more than just getting your prescription. F.E.

Importance of year round sunglasses UV protection

A UV-Awareness Campaign from The Vision Council

Every day – whether it is sunny or cloudy, and despite the season – we are exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UV radiation can’t be seen or felt, and over time, it has a damaging effect on eyes. “UV Been Missing Something,” is a campaign developed by The Vision Council to encourage the regular use of ultraviolet protection for the eyes. The goal of the campaign is to educate about the harmful effects of unprotected UV exposure and that everyone is aware sunglasses or other eyewear that offers UV protection.
