Quick Take: This Spring/Summer 2012 season, Fendi debuts a sun and optical collection that embodies the timeless and iconic design elements synonymous with the luxurious fashion house.
Specifics: Four new optical styles and four new sun styles.
Design Points: The double “F” logo is inlayed onto rich zyl in unique forms, whether on end pieces or repeating, layered onto triple laminate temples. Color blocking highlights frame shapes that are skillfully crafted from both custom zyl and polished metal. Sleek and unexpected, Fendi pushes expectations and reinterprets the Fendi “F” to create innovative temples, re-emphasizing the fashion forward philosophy of the legendary brand. For sun, the FS5257, inspired by the Fendi “Mia” handbag, is made of plastic in a cat-eye shape with the Fendi interlocking double “F” logo is inlayed onto end pieces underneath a distinctive brow that extends towards temples. Featured in the S/S 2012 Fendi ad campaign, the FS5261 is inspired by the RTW Cruise collection with strategic color blocking that highlights the curves of the modified, slightly rounded, cat-eye frame. Smooth zyl lines and metal corners describe the modern FS5211 where the Fendi double “F” pattern is discreetly hidden in custom double laminate zyl. Lastly, the FS5226 reinvents the square frame with metal corner accents on a molded polished metal frame. In ophthalmics, the F977 and F960 feature elongated classic elements in a contemporary, sleek style. The F968 integrates the iconic Fendi logos prominently on the frame fronts in an uplifting cat-eye shape. Finally, the F973 features the Fendi double “F” logo inlayed onto the temples in a classic square shape.

Versace Unveils Étoile de la Mer

Quick Take: The launch of the Versace Étoile de la Mer eyewear capsule collection for spring/summer 2012.
Specifics: The capsule series is composed of two sunglasses and one optical model.
Selling Points: The signature piece featuring the new design concept was shown during the Spring/Summer 2012 Versace women’s fashion show in Milan. Using a Versace siren who arrives in the city in the middle of the hot summer as inspiration, Versace’s creative director, Donatella Versace, designed the Étoile de la Mer collection to reflect the same mood as the House’s prêt-à-porter collection. The line includes styles VE2131, a frameless, oversized pilot mask sun with metalwork detail on the lens, the VE4233, a cat-eye sun style with a bi-colored gradient and metal wire brow line, and the VE3167, the optical model with details such as the bi-colored gradient cat-eye and the metal wire brow line. The Spring/Summer 2012 Versace advertising campaign features supermodel Gisele Bündchen wearing the VE2131. The Étoile de la Mer collection will be available in Versace boutiques, as well as through select retailers worldwide this month.

Maui Jim MauiPure Lens Combines Ultra Light Weight and Impact Resistance With Glass-like Clarity

Top Line: MauiPure is expanding its line of polarized lenses with the addition of MauiPure, a glass-polycarbonate hybrid lens that combines ultra light weight, with superior impact-resistance and glass-like clarity. MauiPure lenses will be available beginning April 1 in a new line of three sunglasses designed for active lifestyles.
Close Up: MauiPure offers crisp optics that blends the optical brilliance of Maui Jim’s SuperThin glass with excellent scratch- and impact-resistant properties. The hybrid, injection-molded, de-centered lenses are the lightest lens material in the Maui Jim portfolio, combined with the optical clarity of glass, with an Abbe value over 50.
MauiPure lenses feature PolarizedPlus2 technology with bi-gradient mirrors to cut 99.9 percent of glare and block 100 percent of harmful UV rays. A distinguishing benefit of PolarizedPlus2 is the color vibrancy that results from the use of three rare earth elements causing blues to be bluer, greens to be greener, and reds to really pop.

Vital Stats: Sunglasses with MauiPure lenses will arrive in stores in mid-March in three new styles. Olowalu is the smallest style in the collection and features a rectangular lens. Mala has a slightly curved rectangular lens designed for average face sizes. Nakalele gives a nod to a rimless aviator in a larger style. Each 8-base rimless style features beta-titanium temples and adjustable Rabalon nose bridges for ultra-lightweight comfort. Each style comes in three colors: Black, Rootbeer & Copper or Translucent Gray. Three lens colors are available: Neutral Gray offers the highest level of light reduction for bright, sunny days; HCL Bronze enhances contrast in variable conditions; and Maui HT (High Transmission) is the lens for when most lenses would be too dark.

A strong case for getting sunglasses with good wrap around features

Anti-reflective (AR) coatings provide numerous visual benefits to spectacle wearers. However, coating designers and manufacturers seem to have placed little or no emphasis on reflectance of wavelengths outside the visible spectrum. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sources behind the wearer can reflect from the back lens surface toward the wearer’s eye. Various clear lens materials, with and without AR coatings, were tested for their transmittance and reflectance properties. Although the transmittance benefits of AR coatings were confirmed, most coatings were found to reflect UV radiation at unacceptably high levels. Tinted sun lenses also were tested with similar results. Frame and lens parameters were evaluated, confirming that eyewear that incorporates a high wrap frame and high base curve lenses can prevent UV radiation from reaching the eye. The findings strongly suggest that clear, flat lenses should not be dispensed for long-term use in sunny environments, even if clip-on tints are provided.

Specifics: Six new sunglass styles for women.
Design Points: Oversized and chic, Changeover has large, square lenses and a blend of color and texture, they echo the bohemian vibe of the 70s. Made from acetate with C5 temples, the style features optional gradient lens shading or polarized lenses. The Underspin is a large, faux shield sunglass made from durable, stress-resistant O Matter with the choice of polarized lenses or gradient lens shading. The Sweet Spot has large, round lenses in a lightweight, stress-resistant O Matter frame with Oakley’s Three-Point Fit and the choice of gradient or polarized lenses. Aging Eyes Associated With Disturbances In Body’s Circadian Rhythms

The New York Times (2/21, D5, Tarkan, Subscription Publication) examines the hypothesis that “the aging eye filters out blue light, affecting circadian rhythm and health in older adults.” Studies suggest that the “gradual yellowing of the lens and the narrowing of the pupil that occur with age disturb the body’s circadian rhythm, contributing to a range of health problems.” That is because “as the eyes age, less and less sunlight gets through the lens to reach key cells in the retina that regulate the body’s circadian rhythm, its internal clock.” In a recent study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, researchers “estimated that by age 45, the photoreceptors of the average adult receive just 50 percent of the light needed to fully stimulate the circadian system. By age 55, it dips to 37 percent, and by age 75, to a mere 17 percent.”
