Chanel Breaks Through Clutter With Brad Pitt as New Face of No. 5

Luxury fashion house Chanel confirmed yesterday that Moneyball star Brad Pitt would be the new representative for Chanel No. 5.

Past models for the famous women’s fragrance have included movie stars Nicole Kidman, Audrey Tautou, and Vanessa Paradis. But a man?

Though the decision marks a break from tradition, it’s in keeping with Chanel’s long-running ad campaign in that it not only trades on Pitt’s unimpeachable seductiveness (twice confirmed by People magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive cover), but also brings to mind his equally glamorous partner, Angelina Jolie. In part, “this is a way of saying Angelina Jolie without saying Angelina Jolie,” says William M. O’Barr, professor of cultural anthropology at Duke University and author of ADText, an online textbook about advertising and society. “What’s true about Chanel spokespeople is they are people with classic beauty, and I think this is Brad Pitt’s charm here.”

Specifics: Four new optical styles and four new sun styles.
Design Points: The double “F” logo is inlayed onto rich zyl in unique forms, whether on end pieces or repeating, layered onto triple laminate temples. Color blocking highlights frame shapes that are skillfully crafted from both custom zyl and polished metal. Sleek and unexpected, Fendi pushes expectations and reinterprets the Fendi “F” to create innovative temples, re-emphasizing the fashion forward philosophy of the legendary brand. For sun, the FS5257, inspired by the Fendi “Mia” handbag, is made of plastic in a cat-eye shape with the Fendi interlocking double “F” logo is inlayed onto end pieces underneath a distinctive brow that extends towards temples. Featured in the S/S 2012 Fendi ad campaign, the FS5261 is inspired by the RTW Cruise collection with strategic color blocking that highlights the curves of the modified, slightly rounded, cat-eye frame. Specifics: The capsule series is composed of two sunglasses and one optical model.
Selling Points: The signature piece featuring the new design concept was shown during the Spring/Summer 2012 Versace women’s fashion show in Milan. Using a Versace siren who arrives in the city in the middle of the hot summer as inspiration, Versace’s creative director, Donatella Versace, designed the Étoile de la Mer collection to reflect the same mood as the House’s prêt-à-porter collection. A strong case for getting sunglasses with good wrap around features

Anti-reflective (AR) coatings provide numerous visual benefits to spectacle wearers. However, coating designers and manufacturers seem to have placed little or no emphasis on reflectance of wavelengths outside the visible spectrum. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sources behind the wearer can reflect from the back lens surface toward the wearer’s eye. Various clear lens materials, with and without AR coatings, were tested for their transmittance and reflectance properties. Although the transmittance benefits of AR coatings were confirmed, most coatings were found to reflect UV radiation at unacceptably high levels. Tinted sun lenses also were tested with similar results. Frame and lens parameters were evaluated, confirming that eyewear that incorporates a high wrap frame and high base curve lenses can prevent UV radiation from reaching the eye. The findings strongly suggest that clear, flat lenses should not be dispensed for long-term use in sunny environments, even if clip-on tints are provided.

Aging Eyes Associated With Disturbances In Body’s Circadian Rhythms

The New York Times (2/21, D5, Tarkan, Subscription Publication) examines the hypothesis that “the aging eye filters out blue light, affecting circadian rhythm and health in older adults.” Studies suggest that the “gradual yellowing of the lens and the narrowing of the pupil that occur with age disturb the body’s circadian rhythm, contributing to a range of health problems.” That is because “as the eyes age, less and less sunlight gets through the lens to reach key cells in the retina that regulate the body’s circadian rhythm, its internal clock.” In a recent study published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, researchers “estimated that by age 45, the photoreceptors of the average adult receive just 50 percent of the light needed to fully stimulate the circadian system. By age 55, it dips to 37 percent, and by age 75, to a mere 17 percent.”
