Make no mistake, Glasses are not TV’s or Cell phones or other things you might order online. When you receive your glasses in the mail, you can’t just turn it on to verify if the prescription is working and accurate. Glasses are medical device’s used to help organ’s in your body function better. A good pair of glasses help your visual/brain and hand eye coordination perform better. A bad Rx or cheap lenses can cause headaches and other problems. A cheap pair of Sunglasses may cause even more harmful UV rays to enter into and cause permanent to damage your eyes. Manufacturing a great pair of glasses to specific tolerances is a difficult thing to do and requires highly experienced, trained personal. We don’t take your vision lightly and neither should you – FE.

ST. LOUIS—Consumers who order prescription eyeglasses online often receive glasses that fail to comply with optical tolerance and impact resistance requirements, according to a newly released study conducted by the American Optometric Association in conjunction with the Optical Laboratories Association and The Vision Council.

The study, which was published in the September issue of Optometry: Journal of the American Optometric Association, found that nearly half of the prescription eyewear ordered online in the U.S.—44.8 percent—had incorrect prescriptions or did not meet physical parameters to provide sufficient protection to the wearer.

Over a two-month period in 2010, 10 individuals from across the U.S. ordered two pairs of glasses, including pairs for both adults and children, from each of 10 of the most visited online optical vendors, for a total of 200 pairs of glasses. Frame styles were chosen from the mid-range options offered by each vendor, in varying frame materials, lens styles and prescriptions. The AOA’s published article did not identify the online optical vendors/retailers selected for the study.

Of the eyeglasses ordered, 154 pairs were received. After they were received, lens analysis included measurement of sphere power, cylinder power and axis, add power (if specified), separation of distance optical centers and center thickness.

Several pairs were provided incorrectly such as single vision instead of bifocals, or lens treatments that were added or omitted, the AOA reported. In 29 percent of glasses received, at least one lens was not within the parameters of the prescription. Nearly 23 percent of the lenses failed impact testing, based on center thickness and lens treatment. Of the children’s glasses tested, 29 percent failed impact testing.

Karl Citek, OD, PhD, a lead study author from Pacific University College of Optometry, noted that patients who purchase eyewear without the assistance of a trained professional may not receive a product of equal performance, value or safety. “Patients do not receive the benefit of ensuring an accurate prescription and a proper fit,” he wrote.

Sam Pierce, OD, trustee for the AOA, said consumers should be cautious when ordering any medical devices online. “Although online retailers may effectively market cost savings associated with online purchase of eyewear, consumers should beware, as this study points out, that the lack of oversight and quality control can lead to inferior products that could be harmful,” Pierce said.

Note: another common problem, in many cases, each eye has a different prescription, but drug store lenses always have the same prescription for both eyes. These cheap glasses do not correct for astigmatism either. They also do not have anti-glare properties – glare can further increase strain on the eye. Anti-glare treatment also allows more light to enter the lens, allowing you to see better in low light situations. Not to mention, drug store glasses simply are not very becoming! – F.E.

Not only do those who wear glasses to correct either distance or close vision have difficulty, but also those who wear progressive lenses, too, unless they look at the screen exactly in the right spot. According to the American Optometric Association, approximately 40% of Americans spend three or more hours daily focusing on an electronic device with a screen. For some nearsighted middle-aged people, removing their distance glasses might be enough to help them read their computer screen for a while until they lose their close vision.

A high quality progressive lens can sometimes help with this issue, but is very dependent on the patients requirements. There are always trade-offs that are going to need to be made. If you are spending all day in front of the computer for work, then it can be worth it to get a pair of glasses with lenses that a designed specifically for the patient and computer usage. A high quality computer lens provides maximum “mid distance” coverage. This results in less strain on the eye and neck. Having the right tools for the job is always important, and your vision is one of your most important tools!

Our eye care facility is staffed by eye doctors who care about your computer vision requirements. We’re located in the Heb shopping center at Parmer and 1431, located at the three corners of Cedar Park, Austin and Round Rock, TX and a short drive from Georgetown, TX , Teravista and Avery Ranch.

LAHAINA, Maui–Maui Jim has introduced the MauiPassport Rx lens, which provides prescription sunglass wearers, including those who prefer wrap-styles, clarity, acuity, color enhancement and glare protection across the entire field of view.

“Our new lenses are designed specifically for our frames, base curves and materials,” said Chris Abbruzzese, vice president of marketing for Maui Jim.

“Factors such as pantascopic tilt, panoramic tilt and vertex distance are taken into account, resulting in lenses that optimize the performance of each individual prescription. With our latest technological breakthrough, we’ve not only eliminated the mold process but created concrete benefits for both patients and practitioners alike.”

For both single vision and progressive prescriptions, the MauiPassport uses digital surfacing technology to create each lens, a back-surface lens design created in conjunction with Shamir Optical Industry Ltd. to compensate for wrap-induced distortion and provide perfect edge-to-edge clarity. According to Abbruzzese, the new Maui Jim digital surfacing process is accurate to within 1/100th of a diopter. The lenses also incorporate Maui Jim’s patented glare protection and color enhancement of PolarizedPlus2 technology.

MauiPassport lenses are available for polycarbonate and Maui Evolution 1.6, in single vision and progressive and are priced to the dispenser between $207 to $614 for the lens.

Maui Jim sunglasses and Maui-Jim prescription sunglasses are available at Fine Eyewear & Eye care, located the three corners of Cedar Park, Austin and Round Rock, TX and a short drive from Georgetown, TX.
